forge:~$ hello

Arch Linux built for playing games, making games and making music. A kernel compiled for modern CPUs, tuned system settings, sched-ext schedulers, NVIDIA hybrid graphics and realtime audio, delivered through forgeOS's own signed repository on top of plain Arch, with upgrades that are tested before they touch your system.

forgeOS logo: an anvil and a flame

A kernel built for speed

linux-forgeos is compiled from source for x86-64-v3 with Clang ThinLTO and -O3: 1000 Hz, full preemption, tickless. Kernel patches and tunings from CachyOS.

Tuned system settings

Compressed RAM swap, an I/O scheduler per disk type, ntsync for Wine and Proton, memory and writeback tuning, realtime limits for audio.

Swappable CPU schedulers

sched-ext is built in and the scx schedulers are installed: switch to scx_lavd's gaming mode with one command, and back.

Games

Steam, NVIDIA open drivers with Intel hybrid offload (prime-run), 32-bit Vulkan and Mesa, ready on first boot.

Make games and music

Installer options add a game development toolchain (Vulkan SDK, RenderDoc, Clang, MinGW, Wine) and an audio production set (plugins, yabridge, JACK through PipeWire).

Upgrades tested first

forge system-upgrade snapshots the system, runs the whole upgrade in a trial copy, shows what changed, and only then asks.

Arch underneath

Arch's repositories, pacman, the AUR and the Arch Wiki all apply. forgeOS adds its own signed repository on top.

One desktop, themed as one

Hyprland with login and lock screens, bar, launcher, window overview, calendar and Tweaks, all in the same theme.

The [forgeos] repository

This site is also the package repository forgeOS machines update from. It holds only forgeOS's own packages; everything else comes from Arch's mirrors as usual. Every package and the database are signed.

forgeOS installs are already set up for it. To add it by hand (for example on a forgeOS machine installed before the repository existed), trust the key first:

curl -O https://forgeos.isengard.no/forgeos.gpg
sudo pacman-key --add forgeos.gpg
sudo pacman-key --lsign-key 9D7346A872CB485A896D180295033E86C2FEC5B8

Then add this to /etc/pacman.conf, above [core], so forgeOS's versions win over a same-named Arch package:

[forgeos]
SigLevel = Required
Server = https://forgeos.isengard.no/$arch

The key's fingerprint is 9D73 46A8 72CB 485A 896D 1802 9503 3E86 C2FE C5B8. Compare it with what pacman-key --finger shows before you sign it.
